Interface Overview:

Familiarize yourself with the Kdenlive interface, which includes the timeline, project bin, effects library, monitor windows, and various panels. Experiment with and learn the purpose and functionality of each element to efficiently navigate and use Kdenlive.

Kdenlive’s interface includes five main parts:

  • The Menubar at the very top.
  • A toolbar at the top.
  • Several windows in the middle.
  • Another toolbar above timeline.
  • A status Bar at the bottom.

You can rearrange the sections of Kdenlive’s user interface just about anyway you want to. The default position shows both the clip editor and the project editor. I rearrange mine so that I can switch back and forth between the two monitors and I show the Effects/Composition Stack and Audio Mixer alongside the Project Bin and Monitor on that main row. Set the timeline tracks to four video tracks and three audio tracks or whatever you want.

The Project Bin is that top left section, just below the Main Menu, where you import your media files. You can easily drag and drop the files from the file system on your computer into the Project Bin. Gather them all together in the Project Bin and name and organize them well, so you can easily find your content when you need it.

The Clip Monitor enables you to select and monitor and edit an individual clip from inside the Project Bin. Just select the clip in the Project Bin and then select the Clip Monitor. Switch back to the Project Monitor to work on the video you are producing.

The Timeline is the four video tracks and three audio tracks near the bottom of Kdenlive. Drag images and video clips from the Project Bin onto the timeline and place them where you want them. Experiment. Play. Have fun, creating audio visual art.

The Audio Mixer enables you to adjust the audio on your project. You can adjust the volume on each individual audio track and you can adjust the volume of the whole project.

You can toggle the Main Menu on and off with Ctrl-m.
