Finishing Projects

If you have a full time job that interrupts your website development work, like me, then you’re going to have to get in the habit of being mindful about finishing projects. When you start a project that takes more than one weekend, then you should restart that project when you get back to work, instead of starting a new project.

Get your work organized. Get your home directory well organized. Create a DotFiles directory that you can copy all your dot files into, so you don’t have to build them from scratch, every time you build a new desktop. Dot files are the configuration files, where you can set the way your applications appear and function. Keep each dot file well organized.

Each application will have it’s own dot file. Some will be in your Home directory, some in .config directory and some in other places. The developer of the applications, sets the location of the dot file for that application. The application will look for the dot file in the location designated by the developer.

Do your own research. Figure out where your configuration files are and learn how to edit them properly. And then, copy them into a DotFiles directory. Learn how to configure your computer and how to use it well.

Create each of your projects in a separate directory. Use Tmux to help you keep your projects well organized. Save steps and seconds every chance you get. Keep all your files well organized, both, each one individually and all together.

Keep one or two projects going at a time. Get in the habit of finishing projects, before you start new ones. Return to your project and finish it, before you start a new project.

Get in the habit of writing your ideas for new projects in a note. Start using your calendar application to schedule your activity. Cultivate a high performance rhythm of productivity. Self discipline is a vital facet of self determination, which is a vital facet of your private, free enterprise.

Private ownership of your means of production and self determination are the most productive economic system ever developed in human history. It has to do with cooperating with our instinctual human nature, rather than trying to control it.

Self preservation is one of the most primal instincts in all life on earth. Self determination is an evolutionary descendant of self preservation. It’s the same program, adapted for another purpose.

Of course, freedom is lawful, not lawless. We all need one common law that every civilized human being understands and follows. Your religion is the source of that divine rule of law. I prefer Baha’u’llah and the Baha’i Faith. The important thing is that you study the Word of God and practice spirituality in your life.

I mention this here, because the rule of law is a vital aspect of free enterprise and the divine rule of law, revealed by God, is far superior to any man made rules. God makes the rules.

Get back to work on your projects. Start with your website. Once you get your website setup and running, start thinking about building other projects. Learning a language or other skill. Start developing applications that run on your computer natively, rather than in a browser.

Get really good at setting up very high performance computer operating systems. Then, get really good at using your computer, to produce your own channel of entertaining education.
